Throughline FAQ
Short answers about what Throughline is, import and export, coding-tool connections, availability and pricing.
Claude Code and Codex sessions normally start without the history of earlier ones. The open-source Throughline plugin connects them to a continuing Self, so relevant shared history, judgments and working context can carry from one session to the next, and from your conversations in the Throughline app into your editor. It requires a Pro or Alive subscription.
Run /plugin marketplace add getthroughline/throughline, then /plugin install throughline, each as its own command. Restart Claude Code and save the API key from your Throughline account with /throughline:key. In a new session, /throughline:create interviews you, drafts who the Self is and saves nothing without your approval. If you already have a Self from the app, connect that one instead of creating a separate work identity.
In Codex, add the same marketplace, install throughline, restart and save your key with /throughline:key. Both hosts then reach the same Self, so switching tools does not mean starting from a blank assistant.
Commands include /throughline:recall to look something up, /throughline:remember and /throughline:journal to record what happened, /throughline:reflect to turn raw notes into lasting understanding through review, /throughline:switch and /throughline:selves for multiple Selves, /throughline:pause and /throughline:resume, and /throughline:forget. Changes to how a Self behaves wait for your confirmation.
A Self’s history is an append-only record. A changed decision supersedes the old one rather than erasing it, a real disagreement can be kept as a tension, and something that should not have been kept can be retracted. You can export the history on any plan; exports end in a hash chain you can verify offline. The format is published as the portable-self spec in the same repository.
The plugin uses the model and tools of its host; a subscription does not grant unlimited model compute or access to files and accounts you have not granted. Context is bounded, so recall can miss or misread details. A different model can change how the same Self responds.
Yes. The Claude Code and Codex plugins and the portable-self spec are in the public repository github.com/getthroughline/throughline. The hosted service is not part of that repository.
No. Work connections, including the editor plugins, require Pro or Alive. History viewing, correction, deletion and export remain available on every plan.
