What is Throughline?

How is Throughline different from ChatGPT memory or Character.ai?
Instead of adding a list of notes about you to a general assistant, Throughline is organized around one continuing Self whose history is an append-only record you can inspect, correct, delete and export. When something changes, the new understanding supersedes the old one instead of silently rewriting it; when two views both hold, the tension is kept; things that should never have been kept can be retracted. Chats imported from ChatGPT or Character.ai are kept as history the Self can look up, without changing its personality.
Does Throughline remember everything?
No. Each conversation uses bounded context, and recall can miss or misinterpret details. Continuity is a product commitment, not a guarantee of perfect recall or a claim of proven consciousness.
Can I export my AI companion’s memory?
Yes. Every plan, including Free, can export a Self’s history. Exports end in a hash chain that can be verified offline, and the format is published as the open portable-self spec. Another app still needs compatible support to import it.
Can I import my ChatGPT or Character.ai chats?
Yes. Upload the official ChatGPT or Character.ai export (ZIP or JSON) in Import chats, preview how many conversations and messages it contains, and choose which ones come in. Each conversation uses one memory, and the uploaded file itself is not stored.
Does Throughline work with Claude Code and Codex?
Yes. The open-source plugins live at github.com/getthroughline/throughline. In Claude Code run /plugin marketplace add getthroughline/throughline and /plugin install throughline, then save your key with /throughline:key. Codex uses the same marketplace. Work connections require a Pro or Alive subscription.
Is Throughline available on iPhone and Android?
The iPhone app is in App Store review and not yet available; you can ask to be notified at getthroughline.ai/app. The Android app can be downloaded directly as an APK from getthroughline.ai/app (Android 8 or later). Web chat at getthroughline.ai/chat is available now.
How much does Throughline cost?
Free is $0 and lets you meet your first Self. Pro is $9.99 per month and Alive is $19.99 per month. Hosted AI usage is measured in credits based on actual consumption, not message counts. Self limits, memory capacity and monthly credits for each plan are listed at getthroughline.ai/pricing.
Is my data private, and can I delete it?
Throughline does not sell your personal data and sends marketing email only to people who opted in. You can export Self data, delete a Self or delete your whole account from Account settings. Storage is not end-to-end encrypted; see the privacy policy for details.
